The Summer Intern

He was the intern. She ran the place. A slow-burn office erotica short story, remembered twenty-two years later.

Twenty-two years later, a journalist asks her about regret.

Saranya Nair runs a nine-person Toronto ad agency the way she runs everything: completely, quietly, without ever raising her voice. At twenty-eight she knows where every contract is filed, what each client actually meant, and precisely what her sarees do to the men in the room.

Then Gauthier hires a summer intern.

Samay is twenty-four, up from Mumbai for eight weeks, funny in a way that rearranges a room. He gets everyoneโ€™s coffee order right without being told. He notices things.

He notices her.

For eight weeks neither of them says it. A narrow supply room. A tap that was always going to break. A saree that comes undone at precisely the wrong moment, in front of precisely the wrong person.

Then itโ€™s his last night in Canada, and Saranya has never once failed to plan.

A standalone erotic short story. There is the story of one night remembered twenty-two years later. Adults only 18+.

A glimpse beneath the sheets…

A journalistโ€™s question about anything she regretted brought back memories of Samay, a summer intern from over two decades ago. Saranya had been twenty-eight then. He was twenty-four, up from Mumbai for eight weeks.

He was a quick learner, helped without taking credit and was genuinely good at his work. He didnโ€™t try to impress, had a way of making everyone laugh, which was the exact opposite of her ex. He would bring coffee for the entire office without being asked. The girls in the office openly flirted with him and she found herself drawn to him.

They worked late, the two of them, not by arrangement โ€” they simply ended up occupying the same space after everyone else had gone, the way certain objects end up in the same drawer without anyone putting them there.

***

One Friday the safety pin holding her pleats gave up during a client call that ran over two hours, and she slipped into the staff bathroom to re-drape properly. The lock had not worked since before her time.

He knocked. She said, โ€œOne min.โ€

He heard, โ€œCome in.โ€

The door opened. She startled and let go, and the saree gathered itself around her feet. Her elbow, moving reflexively, connected with the tap. Hard.

Cold water came out of the shower like a punishment.

He moved without thinking, reaching past her for the tap, one arm around her, and she was against his chest in a wet blouse and petticoat with the red polka dots of her bra showing straight through. He got the tap and shut it off. Neither of them moved.

She was very aware of his arm still loosely around her, and of how warm he was against all that cold water, and of the fact that he had not looked away from her once and did not appear able to. Her nipples had gone hard in the cold and were straining the soaked blouse. She watched him try not to look at them, and fail, twice.

She looked down. He was hard, straining against his trousers, close enough that another inch would have put him against her stomach. She looked back up at his face and let him see that she had noticed.

She wanted to reach out and touch him. Her hand had actually started to move whenโ€”

โ€œSaranyaโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say sorry.โ€

He scratched his head. โ€œI was going to say I donโ€™t have a change of clothes.โ€

The door handle rattled. Someone outside, waiting their turn. He turned away.

She bit her tongue and smiled at the back of his neck.

Weeks passed. As his last day approached, the tension between them grew.

***

On his last evening she waited until the building was empty, put the reference letter she had written the day before down in front of him โ€” the truest thing she had ever written about anyone โ€” and asked him to walk her home. It was eleven blocks. They did them slowly.

โ€œWhen do you leave for India?โ€ she asked, as they stopped in front of her house.

โ€œTomorrow evening.โ€ He kicked a pebble by his foot and would not look up.

โ€œThen we only have tonight.โ€

His head came up. There were a hundred questions in his face and only one of them mattered.

โ€œIโ€™ve been sure since the shower, dummy.โ€ She held his gaze. Steady. Direct. โ€œYour turn to decide. Now or never.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t thinkโ€”โ€

โ€œStop thinking. Start doing.โ€

He kissed her. Not tentatively. Not carefully. He kissed her with his whole attention and nothing held back. Her lips parted, their tongues met and eight weeks went out of her in a single breath.

She broke it. Fumbled in her bag for the keys. They fell out of her hand. He picked them up. โ€œEasyโ€”dummy,โ€ he said, handing them over.

โ€œShut up.โ€ She took them. โ€œYou are in so much trouble.โ€

โ€œI love trouble.โ€

She grabbed his wrists and pulled him up the steps. โ€œWeโ€™ll see about that,โ€ she said, dragged him in by the collar and kicked the door shut.
